adjusted
- 1Simple past and past participle of adjust.
The accountant adjusted the figures to reflect rising costs.

Note
A regular -ed form doing double duty, as simple past (she adjusted the mirror) and as past participle (the mirror has been adjusted). Only the transitive uses can turn passive: modifying, correcting, settling an insurance claim. The intransitive one, changing to fit circumstances, stays active, as in he adjusted quickly to the new school. Once it accepts more or most, it has become the bias-corrected adjective rather than the verb.
- 2Modified to offset a distorting factor, so the resulting figure is free of bias.
Like correcting a photo's lighting so the colors look as they really are, not as the lamp tinted them.
Economists prefer the adjusted figures because they account for seasonal swings.
The adjusted rate removes the effect of population growth from the totals.
