adventures
- 1Plural of adventure.
The novel recounts the daring adventures of two shipwrecked explorers.
Childhood adventures in the nearby woods shaped her love of the outdoors.
Note
Only the countable meanings of adventure can take this plural. The longing for new and exciting things stays singular: a spirit of adventure, never a spirit of adventures. Daring feats, striking events, a merchant's hazarded shipments and adventure games all pluralize freely. The same spelling is also the verb's present-tense form, so she adventures and her adventures belong to different parts of speech.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of adventure. Literary.
Each spring she adventures deep into the uncharted forest with only a map.
The novel's hero adventures across three continents in search of his lost brother.
Note
A verb with an old-fashioned ring: every meaning it carries is archaic, so it suits period prose or a deliberately elevated style. With an object, it names what is put at stake, as in he adventures his fortune or his good name. Without one, it means taking the chance itself. Venture is its closest synonym.
