appealed
uh-PEELD/əˈpiːld/
- 1Simple past and past participle of appeal.
The company appealed the ruling within the thirty-day window.
The plan appealed to her sense of adventure.
Note
One spelling serves past tense and participle, and the construction shows which use is meant. The court sense can take a direct object, so the participle can go passive: the decision was appealed. Without an object it takes a preposition, as in appealed against the ruling or appealed to a higher court. So does the invoking use (she appealed to his conscience). Under the old common law, a person appealed was a person accused, often of treason.
