appeared
- 1Simple past and past participle of appear.
A strange light appeared on the horizon just before dawn.
The witness had appeared before the same committee twice already.
Note
One regular -ed spelling does double duty: the light appeared is simple past, the witness had appeared is the perfect. Nearly every meaning of appear takes no object, so the participle pairs with have rather than be, and a passive is not available for those meanings. Only the rare sense "to bring into view" takes an object at all. As a linking verb, appeared works like seemed: she appeared calm.
