approves
Sayuh-PROOVZ/əˈpɹuːvz/
- 1Third-person singular simple present of approve.
The committee approves new members at each monthly meeting.
She approves of the changes her son made to the garden.
Note
One spelling does two quite different jobs, and the preposition tells them apart. Without of, it means official sanction: a board approves a budget, a council approves a plan. With of, the judgment turns personal, as when a parent approves of a child's friends and simply thinks well of them. Older English also used it to mean 'proves' or 'demonstrates', a sense now archaic.
