assigned
- 1Simple past and past participle of assign.
The manager assigned the new project to her most experienced team.
Every recruit was assigned to a unit after basic training.
Note
One regular -ed spelling covers both the simple past (the manager assigned the project) and the participle after have or be. In the passive it usually takes to for the person, place or post receiving: assigned to a unit. Because assign also means transferring property or a legal right, the same form appears in legal prose, where rights are assigned to a buyer.
- 2Allocated to a particular person or set apart for a specific task or purpose.
Volunteers reported to their assigned stations as soon as the event opened.
The committee reviewed how closely staff followed their assigned roles.
Similardesignated, allocated, appointed
Note
Placed before a noun, the participle settles into a plain adjective: assigned seating, assigned stations. It does not grade, so nothing is more assigned or very assigned than anything else, and it sits beside other fixed classifiers rather than intensifiers. Once an agent comes into view (seats were assigned by the usher), the word is doing passive work as the past participle of assign.
