assumptions
- 1Plural of assumption.
The whole plan rested on a few shaky assumptions that nobody had checked.

Note
The plural most naturally carries the countable, "thing supposed" side of assumption: the premises that a plan, a model or an argument rests on. It is at home in logic, economics and modeling, where a set of stated assumptions limits what conclusions can validly follow. The usual verbs are make, rest on, question and challenge. Logic also uses it narrowly, for the minor premises of syllogisms.
