at all

UK

1 meaning of at all

Practice

  1. 1
    idiom
Used to mark any degree, quantity, or frequency above zero: to even the slightest degree, in any way, at any time, or under any circumstances.

Is the new manager at all familiar with how the old system worked?

If you can come at all, we'd love to see you at the reunion.

    Similarwhatsoever, any

    Note

An intensifier that works only where zero is still possible: negatives ("you mustn't speak to her at all"), questions ("can you see anyone at all?") and if-clauses ("if you are at all concerned"). It can close the clause or sit before an adjective or participle, as in "are you at all bothered?" A plain positive statement leaves it nothing to do, so "I liked it at all" sounds wrong.
