attacked
uh-TAKT/əˈtækt/
- 1Simple past and past participle of attack.
Rebel forces attacked the fortress at dawn.
Critics attacked her new film for its sluggish pacing.
Note
One regular -ed spelling does double duty: the past tense (rebels attacked at dawn) and, after have or be, the participle of perfects and passives. Because nearly every meaning of attack takes an object, the passive comes easily: a city attacked by rebels, metal attacked by acid, a minister attacked in the press. The exception is cricket, where a bowler can simply have attacked, with no object, by setting a field or bowling for wickets.
