attributing
- 1Present participle and gerund of attribute.
Historians are attributing the painting to a lesser-known pupil of the master.
Attributing the delay to bad weather, the committee dodged the harder questions.
Note
Only the verb yields this -ing form. The noun attribute, a quality or a typical object, has none, so attributing always names the act of assigning. It keeps the verb's pattern of the thing first, then to plus a cause or an author: attributing the delay to weather, attributing a poem to a known hand. As a gerund it can open a sentence or follow a preposition, as in wary of attributing motives.
