averaged
- 1Simple past and past participle of average.
The fund averaged a seven percent return over the decade.
Rainfall averaged three inches a month during the dry season.
Note
One regular -ed form does the work of both simple past and past participle, so context decides: we averaged the scores (past), the scores have been averaged (participle). It also covers two different jobs. Someone who averaged the scores computed a mean, but a fund that averaged seven percent simply had that mean over time, and only the first turns passive. The same spelling also serves as the adjective for pooled figures.
- 2Replaced by a single average value rather than kept as separate individual figures.
Like blending many photographs into one image where only the shared shapes remain.
The report presented averaged figures, masking the sharp weekly fluctuations.
Researchers preferred the averaged measurements for their steadier trend line.

Note
Here the participle of the computing verb has settled into an adjective for numbers, usually placed before a noun: averaged figures, averaged readings, averaged data. It does not take degrees, because a set of figures either has been reduced to its mean or has not. You would not say more averaged or very averaged. Raw or individual figures make the natural contrast.
