avoided
- 1Simple past and past participle of avoid.
The driver avoided a collision by braking hard at the intersection.
Most of these problems could have been avoided with better planning.
Note
One spelling does double duty here: simple past in "she avoided him," participle after have or be. Every meaning of avoid takes a direct object, so the passive comes easily, as in "problems that could have been avoided." The form also carries the older legal meaning of annulling. "The contract was avoided" means it was made void, not dodged. An obsolete sense of emptying or clearing survives only in old texts.
