awaited
- 1Simple past and past participle of await.
The villagers awaited the arrival of the spring rains.
He had awaited her reply for weeks before finally giving up.
Note
One spelling does double duty: the plain past (they awaited news) and the participle after have or be (had awaited, was awaited). Await takes its object directly, so it needs no preposition. You await a reply but wait for one. That direct object is what lets the passive work, as in a reply long awaited. The word also sits on the more formal side of plain wait.
The verdict was awaited with dread in both towns.
Results are still awaited from three districts.
