bannering
USBAN-er-ing/ˈbænəɹɪŋ/UK · AUSBAN-uh-ring/ˈbænəɹɪŋ/
- 1Present participle of banner.
Activists were bannering the overpass when the police arrived.
The editor kept bannering every minor scandal across the top of the paper.
Note
The -ing form does double duty. After be it builds the progressive (were bannering the overpass); on its own it works as a gerund that names the activity itself, as in a habit of bannering minor scandals. Both verb meanings behind it are transitive, so it normally takes an object: you banner a bridge with cloth, or banner a story across the top of the page.
