begged
BEGD/bɛɡd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of beg.
He begged the judge for mercy before the sentence was read.
The villagers had begged for aid long before the river overflowed.
Note
One spelling does double duty: the simple past (she begged) and the participle after have or in the passive (had begged, was begged to stay). The final g doubles before -ed. In begged the question, the older meaning is "assumed the point at issue." Using it to mean "raised the question" is widely objected to, so careful writers avoid it.
