bonusses
- 1Plural of bonus. A less common spelling of bonuses.
Management promised generous bonusses to the top sellers this year.
The board voted to cut executive bonusses after the disappointing quarter.
Note
The doubled s is the less common spelling of a plural more often written bonuses, and formal writing generally prefers the single s. The spelling is not a modern slip. It appears in the Documents Accompanying the Journal of the House of Representatives of 1839 and again in Michiel Frederick Coetzer's Leading Business Beyond Profit (2019), usually for money paid to employees on top of their pay.
- 2Third-person singular simple present indicative of bonus. A less common spelling of bonuses.
The firm bonusses its top performers at the end of each fiscal year.
Her manager bonusses anyone who exceeds the quarterly target.
Note
The verb is transitive, so the person rewarded is its direct object: the firm bonusses its staff, not "bonusses to" them. It has the same spelling as the plural noun, and the same preference for a single s applies. In careful writing, the firm bonuses its staff.
