braining
SayBRAYN-ing/ˈbɹeɪnɪŋ/
- 1Present participle of brain.
The mob was braining the effigy with clubs in the town square.
Braining the fish before cleaning them is the quickest way to stop the thrashing.
Note
One spelling does two jobs. As a participle it builds progressives (was braining the effigy), and as a gerund it names the act itself (braining the fish). Most uses are transitive and violent, with the victim as object. The intransitive sense of thinking well is humorous and nonstandard, so braining with no object usually signals that joke rather than a blow.
