Buddhism
USBUU-di-zuhm/ˈbʊ.dɪ.zəm/
- 1A religion and philosophy founded on the teachings of Gautama Buddha.
Buddhism spread across much of Asia along ancient trade routes.
He turned to Buddhism for guidance during a difficult year.
Note
The name is built plainly from Buddha plus -ism, the suffix English uses for systems of belief and thought. It is usually uncountable and takes no article: one studies or practices Buddhism, not a Buddhism. The plural Buddhisms does exist, though. It appears when a writer wants to stress that Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana are distinct traditions rather than one uniform doctrine.
