buttoned
- 1Simple past and past participle of button.
The boy buttoned his jacket against the biting wind.
She had buttoned the dress carefully before the ceremony.
Note
One spelling serves two jobs here. It is the finite past in she buttoned her coat, and the participle after have or in the passive in the coat was buttoned. Because button works both transitively and intransitively, the form can also describe the garment itself: the dress buttoned down the back. The same spelling doubles as an adjective, for having buttons at all and for having them done up.
- 2Having its buttons fastened so the garment is closed.
The tightly buttoned jacket kept out the wind on the ferry.
She arrived in a fully buttoned uniform, looking crisp and ready.

- 3Equipped with one or more buttons.
The designer chose a buttoned cuff instead of a zipper.
Older phones had a buttoned keypad rather than a touchscreen.
Note
Here the buttons need not fasten anything. A buttoned sofa carries buttons set into its upholstery, and a buttoned cuff simply has them. The adjective describes what an object is fitted with, not what state it is in. That is the clean way to tell it from the "done up" meaning: a shirt can be buttoned in this sense and still hang wide open.
