cared
SayKAIRD/kɛɹd/UK/kɛəd/AUS/keːd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of care.
The volunteers cared for stranded families throughout the harsh winter.
He never cared what other people thought of his choices.
Note
One spelling does two jobs: the simple past (she cared deeply) and the participle after have (she has always cared). Because care for takes its object through a preposition, the participle can still form a passive, with for left stranded at the end: the children were well cared for. The polite 'want' meaning moves into the perfect for offers looked back on: would you have cared to join us?
