carroting
SayKAR-uh-ting/ˈkæɹətɪŋ/
- 1A stage in felt manufacture in which animal pelts are treated with a solution of mercury salts, such as mercuric nitrate, to prepare the fur for matting.
After carroting, the brittle pelts were dried and shaved for the felt-makers.
The carroting bench sat in a poorly ventilated back room.
Note
The name is a color word: the fur turned carrot-orange as it dried after treatment. The solution was brushed onto the fur while it was still on the pelt, then dried with heat, as Constantine F. Fabian's U.S. patent of 1942 describes. The mercury outlives the process. Alison Matthews David's Fashion Victims (2015) notes that its remnants still threaten museum professionals. Secretage names the same process.
