Origin
This word came into Middle English as cimiterie from Old French cimitiere, which came through Medieval and Late Latin from Ancient Greek koimētḗrion, from koimáō ("I put to sleep"). It displaced the earlier English words charnel and Old English līctūn for a burial ground.
