chaat
- 1A savory snack from India and other South Asian countries, sold at roadside stalls or served as a starter in Indian restaurants.
Like nachos from a food truck, but built on Indian flavors of spice, yogurt, and tamarind.
The vendor handed us a plate of chaat topped with yogurt, chickpeas, and tamarind sauce.
Many Indian restaurants offer chaat as a starter to share before the main courses arrive.
Note
A borrowing from Hindustani, where the word is written चाट in Devanagari and چاٹ in Urdu script, so it belongs to Hindi and Urdu speakers alike. In English it names a whole family of savory snacks rather than a single dish. It is usually used without an article (a plate of chaat, order some chaat), and the plural chaats appears when several kinds are meant.
