Pluralchargings
- 1The act or process of filling a battery or device with electrical energy.
Repeated fast charging can shorten a lithium-ion battery's lifespan over time.
The charging of the spacecraft's cells happened gradually during each orbit.
- 2Present participle of charge.
The store is charging extra for delivery this week.
Soldiers came charging through the broken gate.
Note
The verb's -ing form, made by dropping the silent e of charge before the suffix. As a participle it builds progressives (the store is charging extra). As a gerund it still acts like a verb and takes a direct object: charging customers for delivery, charging a suspect with theft. That object is the test against the noun for the process, which needs of and can even be plural, chargings.
- 3An offensive foul called when the player holding the ball moves into a defender who has set a stationary position.
The referee whistled charging after the guard barreled into a set defender.
Charging is one of the most debated calls in the game because the contact happens so fast.
Note
A basketball call that puts the fault on the attacker. Once a defender has set a legal guarding position, contact is the ball handler's responsibility. It is a mass noun, so a player is called for charging, never for a charging. The penalty is a turnover: the other team gets the ball, and any basket scored on the play does not count.
Smith is called for charging, and the Nimrods will get the ball.
He was called for charging on the final drive of the game.
