clashed
SayKLASHTUS/klæʃt/UK/klaʃt/
- 1Simple past and past participle of clash.
Protesters and police clashed outside the courthouse for hours.
The bright orange curtains clashed with the soft gray walls.
Note
One spelling serves both the past tense and the participle, and nearly all of its uses are intransitive. Rivals, crowds or colors simply clashed, or have clashed, with nothing on the receiving end. That makes the passive unusual. Only the causative use, making something ring out (swords clashed together), lets a thing be clashed. So "the colors clashed" or "have clashed for years" is idiomatic, while "the colors were clashed" is not.
