coded
- 1Written or expressed in code or cipher rather than in plain language.

Similarencrypted, encoded, cryptic
Oppositeplain, unencrypted
- 2Simple past and past participle of code.
The developer coded the login screen before lunch.
Volunteers coded thousands of interview transcripts for the study.
Note
The verb behind it does a wide range of work. A developer codes software, a researcher codes a data set, and a billing clerk codes a procedure for insurance. Most of these uses take an object (they coded the transcripts). The genetic use is intransitive, as in a gene that coded for a protein. So is the hospital use, where staff who coded called an emergency code.
- 3Portrayed in a way that suggests a particular trait or inspiration without ever stating it explicitly.
The antagonist is subtly coded as aristocratic, all clipped vowels and inherited disdain.
Critics argued the sidekick was coded as queer long before the studio confirmed it.
Note
A word for what a portrayal implies but never states. It works in two ways. It can stand after as (a character coded as autistic), or it can fuse with the trait into a compound (female-coded, male-coded jobs). The hyphen wavers in print: autistic coded also appears open. The compound reaches past fiction to occupations and fields, and the looser 'resembling' use stretches that same pattern further.
- 4Used after a noun, often joined to it with a hyphen, to mean resembling or having the characteristics of the thing named.
That tweed cardigan with the elbow patches is so English professor coded, and I'm here for it.
Lately the morning show has leaned on conservative-coded topics like small-town churches and gas prices.
Note
Here the compound is cut loose from portrayal, and almost anything can be coded: the speaker (me-coded), a video-game NPC, a purée that tastes like baby food. It belongs to casual talk and sits easily beside bro and fr, though Matt Flegenheimer writes of conservative-coded subjects in The New York Times in 2025. So and very intensify it. In formal prose, like or suggestive of is the safer choice.
