comics
- 1The storytelling medium that combines sequential images with text, as found in comic books and comic strips.
He built a career writing and drawing comics for a major publisher.
Comics blend visual art with narrative in ways prose alone cannot.
Note
A plural that behaves like a singular, the way politics does. It typically takes a singular verb when it means the art form, as in "comics is a medium." Scott McCloud draws the line in Understanding Comics (1993): comic book and comic strip name objects, but comics names the medium itself. Compare the ordinary plural, which counts separate magazines or performers.
- 2Plural of comic.
He keeps his old comics stored in protective plastic sleeves.
Several comics performed at the club that night to a packed room.
Note
The countable plural takes a plural verb: the comics were stacked by the door. The singular names both a performer and a publication, so comics can mean a lineup of comedians or a pile of magazines, and only context tells them apart. In British use it can also mean children's magazines. Unlike the name of the medium, this plural always counts separate things.
