commits
- 1Third-person singular simple present of commit.
The court commits repeat offenders to longer rehabilitation programs.
Whoever commits to the project first will lead the team.
Note
The -s form carries every verbal sense of commit. A court commits an offender, a hospital commits a patient, someone commits a crime, and a system commits a set of changes. In the pledging sense, the traditional pattern is reflexive (she commits herself to the plan), but the shorter she commits to the plan is now ordinary too. The same spelling also serves as the plural noun.
- 2Plural of commit.
The repository had hundreds of commits by the time the project shipped.
Her recent commits fixed several long-standing bugs.
Note
Two quite different worlds share this plural. In software, commits are submissions to a repository, each one a change made permanent. In informal US sports talk, commits are recruits, usually high school athletes, who have pledged to attend a college. Context almost always tells them apart: a repository accumulates commits, while a coaching staff counts its commits.
