compared
- 1Simple past and past participle of compare.
The reviewer compared the new model favorably with last year's version.
Critics have compared her writing to that of earlier novelists.
Note
One regular -ed spelling does double duty: the simple past (she compared) and the participle behind perfects and passives (has compared, was compared). The preposition that follows often signals the meaning. Compared with means likenesses and differences were weighed; compared to means a likeness was declared. Without an object it means 'was similar', usually in the negative: nothing compared to the original.
