competed
kuhm-PEE-tid/kəmˈpiːtɪd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of compete.
Dozens of startups competed for the same government contract.
The two athletes had competed against each other many times before.
Note
One spelling does two jobs, as with any regular verb: the simple past (they competed for the contract) and the participle after have (they had competed before). Because compete takes no direct object (you compete against a rival, for a prize, in a contest), the participle nearly always pairs with have rather than be, and passives are rare. The spelling simply adds -d to the final -e.
