compositions
- 1Plural of composition.
The museum displayed several abstract compositions from the artist's later years.
Chemists analyzed the mineral compositions of the rock samples.
Note
A plural that only the countable uses of the noun can take. Every sense of composition can be countable or uncountable, so the plural appears when separate mixtures, proportions or makeups are being compared, as with the mineral compositions of different rock samples. In older texts it can mean something else entirely: agreements settling a dispute, truces, or payments made to clear a debt, all senses now obsolete.
