Note
A plural that appears only when confusion stops being a mass noun. Most senses of confusion, including disorder, bewilderment and embarrassment, are usually uncountable, so the plural belongs mainly to discrete mix-ups: confusions between similar terms, the common confusions of beginners. Where one general fog of misunderstanding is meant, English keeps the singular (there was confusion everywhere), and the plural would sound odd.
