contempts
- 1Plural of contempt.
The defendant racked up two separate contempts during the trial.
Her letters dripped with the petty contempts she felt for the whole family.
Note
A plural that only some meanings of contempt can take. Scorn, the feeling itself, is a mass noun and rarely counts. The countable uses are disgrace and, above all, defiance of a court or legislature, where each act stands on its own: two contempts, separate contempts of court. When the plural does turn up for scorn, as in petty contempts, it recasts the feeling as a string of small acts.
