copyrighting
- 1Present participle and gerund of copyright.
The studio is copyrighting every track before the album launches.
Copyrighting the logo gave the small company real legal protection.
Note
One spelling does two jobs here. It is the participle of a progressive verb (they are copyrighting the score) and the gerund that heads a noun phrase while still taking an object (copyrighting a design). Usually it means securing protection for a work, with or without a stated object. An informal use means flagging someone's post for infringement, much like copystriking it. That use is nonstandard, so keep it out of formal writing.
