corrections
- 1Plural of correction.

Note
What gets counted here are the separate fixes: an error struck out and replaced, an amount added or subtracted to set a figure right, a market's drop after a run of rises. When correction means the act of correcting itself, it stays singular. One use, punishment meant to rehabilitate, lives mostly in the plural, and it has become the criminal-justice field in its own right.
- 2The branch of the criminal justice system responsible for the punishment, treatment, and supervision of people convicted of crimes.

The state increased funding for corrections to ease overcrowding in its prisons.
Note
A US and Canadian name for a whole sector of the justice system: prisons, probation, parole and the rehabilitation they aim at. It works most often as a modifier, as in a corrections officer or a state department of corrections. The word keeps the hopeful sense of its root, that the offender is to be corrected rather than merely confined, which gives it a more official and less blunt tone than prison.
