countries
- 1Plural of country.
Several neighboring countries signed the trade agreement last month.
Wealthier countries pledged additional funding for the relief effort.
Note
The final y of country follows a consonant, so the plural takes the regular -ies spelling, as in cities. Only the countable meanings pluralize. Nations and regions take it freely (the poorest countries), but the rural sense, the country as opposed to the town, is uncountable. A stretch of farmland is never 'countries.' The plural possessive puts the apostrophe after the s: the countries' own poverty lines.
