crediting
- 1Present participle of credit.
The accountant is crediting each donor in the annual report.
Crediting the discovery to a single scientist ignores the whole team's work.
Note
Here one -ing form does two jobs. After a form of be it is a progressive verb (the bank is crediting the account). At the head of a phrase it is a gerund that still takes a direct object, as in crediting the discovery to one scientist. It carries every sense of credit, from believing a claim to acknowledging a contribution. Compare the bookkeeping noun, which takes of and has a plural, creditings.
- 2The act of entering a credit in an account, the bookkeeping step that records an amount on the credit side of a ledger.
The crediting of the supplier's invoice was recorded at the close of business.
An error in the crediting of the deposit threw off the entire reconciliation.
