crept
KREPT/ˈkɹɛpt/
- 1Simple past and past participle of creep.
Fog crept across the valley as the sun went down.
An old fear had crept back into her thoughts.
Note
One irregular form does double duty: the simple past (the fog crept in) and the participle after have (the fog has crept in). Like keep and kept, the verb shortens its vowel and adds -t rather than -ed. Its main uses are intransitive, so the participle pairs with have, not with a passive: ivy creeps over a wall, but a wall is never "crept."
