crewed
- 1Simple past and past participle of crew.
The team crewed the lifeboat through the worst of the storm.
She crewed for a racing yacht in last year's regatta.
Note
Crew is a regular verb, so a single spelling serves both the past tense and the participle: she crewed the yacht; the boat was crewed by volunteers. It works with or without an object, as in crewed the lifeboat and crewed for a yacht. Don't confuse it with the rooster. Crew itself was once an archaic British past of crow, but crewed never belongs to crowing.
- 2Having a crew on board to operate it; staffed and piloted by people aboard.
The agency launched its first crewed spacecraft after years of testing.
Crewed research vessels can adjust their sampling plans in real time.
Similarmanned, staffed, piloted
Oppositeuncrewed, unmanned, robotic, autonomous
Note
Being crewed is all or nothing: a vessel either has people aboard to run it or it does not, so the word takes no more or most. It keeps company with manned and piloted, and it is really the verb's past participle set before a noun. A crewed mission is simply one that someone has crewed.
