Note
The name is built from crypto-, short for "cryptographic", plus currency, and in 1995 Daniel Akst still hyphenated it, explaining it as a kind of digital cash. Now written solid, it works two ways. It is countable for a particular coin (Bitcoin was the first decentralized cryptocurrency; plural cryptocurrencies) and uncountable for the money in bulk ($110 million worth of cryptocurrency). In casual speech it shortens to crypto.
