dared
SayDAIRD/dɛɹd/UK/dɛəd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of dare.
The young officer dared to challenge his commander's orders in front of everyone.
Few critics had dared to question the director's methods before that season.
Note
One regular -ed form does the work of both past tense and past participle: they dared to object, they had dared to object. It carries every meaning of the verb, so what follows decides the reading. With a to-infinitive, as in Robert Frost's line about no one that dared to stir him up, it means found the courage. With a person as object (she dared him to jump), it means challenged.
