debuts
- 1Plural of debut.
The fashion house staged two major debuts during the spring season.
Several authors marked their literary debuts at the festival this year.
Note
The plural covers every kind of first appearance the singular does: a player's or performer's first outing, the opening of a play or film, a debutante's entrance into society, and in the Philippines the celebration of a woman's eighteenth birthday. The same spelling also serves as the present-tense verb, but the two are easy to tell apart: "two debuts" counts events, while "she debuts" reports one.
- 2Third-person singular simple present indicative of debut.
The smartphone debuts at the technology conference this week.
Their lead dancer debuts in the principal role this season.
Note
Two constructions share this form. In the intransitive one, a person or work makes a first appearance, as in "she debuts in the role tonight." In the transitive one, someone presents something to the public, as in "the studio debuts its new series." That transitive pattern is American usage, so writers addressing a wider audience may prefer introduces or launches. The intransitive pattern carries no regional mark.
The studio debuts its new series next month.
Each spring the company debuts a line of electric scooters.
