denied
di-NYD/dɪˈnaɪd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of deny.
The committee denied his request for extra funding.
He was denied access to the sealed records.
Note
One spelling does double duty: the simple past (they denied it) and, after have or be, the perfect and passive forms. Because deny can take two objects, as in refusing someone something, the passive can make the person its subject: he was denied access, with the thing withheld left standing as an object. The y of deny turns to i before -ed.
