designating
- 1Present participle of designate.

Note
One spelling does two jobs. After be it builds the progressive, and on its own it works as a noun, the subject of a sentence or the object of a preposition. When the meaning is setting someone apart for a duty, it takes for or to: designating an officer for the command of a post. Keep it distinct from designate placed after a role title. In British use that is an adjective for someone chosen but not yet in office.
