designs
- 1Plural of design.
The architect presented several designs to the planning committee.
Modern car designs prioritize fuel efficiency over raw horsepower.
Note
Only the countable uses of design take this plural: plans, patterns, schemes, intentions. Design as an uncountable activity or quality has none. The same spelling also serves as the verb's present-tense form, and the word before it tells them apart. A determiner or number (the designs, three designs) marks the noun; a subject (the studio designs) marks the verb.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of design.
The studio designs interactive exhibits for science museums.
Each engineer designs one component of the final system.
Note
The present-tense form for he, she, it or any singular noun subject: she designs, the firm designs. In current English it takes a direct object, so what is designed follows it (designs a bridge). Older uses meaning to plan to do something, or to designate someone for a role, are obsolete, so he designs to leave now sounds out of date. On the spelling it shares, see the plural noun.
