dialogues
- 1Plural of dialogue.
The screenwriter polished the dialogues until each line felt natural.
Several quiet dialogues between the rivals shaped the final treaty.
Note
Only the countable uses of dialogue take this plural: separate conversations, or separate works written in the form of a conversation. When dialogue means the spoken lines of a play or novel as a whole, it often stays a mass noun (a film's dialogue), though individual exchanges can still be counted. For dialog boxes in software, dialogues is a nonstandard spelling; dialogs is the expected form there.
- 2Third-person singular simple present indicative of dialogue.
The mediator dialogues with each side before every joint session.
Her company regularly dialogues with local communities about new projects.
Note
The -s form serves three different verbs. The informal one means talking things through until every side understands the others, and it usually takes with: a mediator dialogues with each side. A transitive verb means recasting material as a conversation, and an older sense, simply taking part in a dialogue, is now obsolete. In careful or formal prose, talks with or negotiates with is the safer choice.
