dimed
- 1Simple past tense and past participle of dime.
The witness dimed the gang leader to federal agents.
He dimed out his accomplice in exchange for a lighter sentence.
Note
Two US slang verbs share this past form. One means informing on someone, often anonymously: the witness dimed the gang leader. The other means running an amplifier at 10, and it sits right beside the guitar-volume adjective. Context sorts them out, since a person who is dimed has been betrayed and an amp that is dimed is loud. The ending is the regular -d that any verb ending in a silent e takes.
- 2Set to maximum volume (level ten on the dial) on an electric guitar or its amplifier.
Like flooring a car's gas pedal: everything pushed to the very top.
With the amplifier dimed, the feedback howled through the speakers.
The guitarist kept his amp dimed all the way through the encore.

Note
Guitar-player slang probably built on a pun: a dime is ten cents, so a dial turned to 10 is dimed. It is not comparable, because a control is either dimed or it is not. It can follow what is set (preamp volume dimed) or come before it (a dimed Marshall plexi). In 1998, players on alt.guitar wondered whether it was New Jersey slang, and Milan Plechata replied that it was common in South Carolina too.
