Note
One spelling serves several unrelated nouns: the dos and don'ts of a rulebook, the office dos on a British social calendar, and, informally, the dos of a salon, short for hairdos. The rule-list sense nearly always travels with its opposite, as when Eleanor H. Porter's David, in Just David (1916), finds that all the pleasant things are don'ts and all the unpleasant ones dos. Context, not spelling, tells them apart.
