drilled
SayDRILD/dɹɪld/
- 1Simple past and past participle of drill.
Engineers drilled deep into the bedrock to sample the rock below.
The coach drilled the team on defensive plays before the championship.
Note
One spelling does double duty, as with any regular verb. It serves as the past tense (they drilled at dawn) and as the participle after have or be (the hole was drilled; the recruits have been drilled). The passive works only where drill takes an object: a hole bored, a team trained, a lesson repeated until it sticks. The intransitive practicing sense has no passive. Soldiers simply drilled.
