eagling
SayEE-gling/ˈiːɡlɪŋ/
- 1Present participle and gerund of eagle.
Eagling the par-five eighteenth, she clinched the championship by a single stroke.
Few amateurs ever come close to eagling a hole twice in the same round.
Note
Golf is the only home of this form. The verb eagle means to score two under par on a hole, and neither the bird nor the old coins ever became verbs. As a participle it follows be (she was eagling the back nine) or opens a clause. As a gerund it names the feat itself, often after a preposition: come close to eagling. The final e of eagle drops before -ing.
